Mo(o)nday Drops đ
When ânormalâ is just what youâve learned to tolerate and how it may be disrupting your life
There is something very important that people seem to still not understand.
Just because you have tolerated certain symptoms your whole life, doesnât mean that things are âgoodâ.
âYes â I have gas everyday but my digestion seems to be fine!â
âOh ya, I get my period once a month, but I have to take Advil for days to mitigate my period crampsâ
âSleep has been an issue for about 10 years, but Iâve always been a night owl.â
âItâs not really bad. Itâs just anxiety around my luteal phase.â
âI still worked out every day, even though I was so exhausted.â
âI thought this was just what happened before your period.â
âI let myself be miserable for quite a long time. Then I realized, âOhâI actually donât want to live like this anymore.ââ
These are real versions of things women have said to me.
Todayâs Mo(o)nday Drop is:
When ânormalâ is just what youâve learned to tolerate
What makes me so sad is that we have completely normalized the experience of discomfort.
And Iâm not talking about the discomfort that comes with growing, taking a risk or stepping outside of your comfort zone.
No.
This is about women feeling like they need to keep pushing through their day to day symptoms because no one has ever told us differently.
What I continue to see over and over again is not only repeating symptoms, but how easy it is for women to write them off.
Weâve learned to call exhaustion ambition.
Anxiety normal.
Pain part of being a woman.
Disconnection independence.
And equate functioning to feeling well.
No wonder why this has happened.
For generations, women have had to fight to be respected, praised and taken seriously. We learned that recognition often came from overriding the very things that made us human.
To function on a 24 hour clock.
To turn off our hormones using birth control so that we wouldnât have to skip a meeting.
To disconnect from our bodies sensually otherwise we were deemed a slut.
To bend over backwards for others, always putting our needs last.
This is what has been ingrained in us.
It is disturbing.
Just because we have been able to survive feeling this way for most of our lives, doesnât mean that we are âgoodâ.
I continue to be reminded of how depleted women have become due to their symptoms. How hard it is for them to be able to live 1 whole month without any symptoms.
Do you know how many years of your life that is??
A lot.
The more we accept these symptoms as ânormalâ or âgoodâ, we put our bodies more at risk. We miss what our bodies have been trying to communicate.
We burnout.
We lose our periods.
We let anxiety dictates our choices.
We struggle to recognize ourselves.
We deplete our system until we can no longer ignore it.
The list goes on, as we all have different versions in how our chronic symptoms manifest.
But the good news is that there is room to change this.
What you have normalized does not have to remain your reality.
We donât need to settle for these symptoms anymore.
Yes, you read that right.
There are ways to heal your body, reconnect with your purpose and take control of your life.
Rather than life controlling you.
It takes dedication.
It takes commitment.
It takes a deep knowing that you are WORTH it.
That you are worth showing up for â even when doing so requires you to stop abandoning yourself.
So, to wrap it up:
What you tolerate becomes your normalâbut it doesnât have to remain your reality.
What have you been calling ânormalâ simply because youâve experienced it for so long
Do you feel like you are worthy of healing?
Are you willing to take the steps to heal your body?
And no â committing to something for 1 month usually isnât going to cut it when you have been dealing with these symptoms for years.
Right now is just about understanding if you are no longer willing to write yourself off.
I would genuinely love to know: what, if anything, has been stopping you from going deeper?
Xoxo,
Sam
